• May 27 – Bach House opens in what is at this time believed to be the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach, the first museum devoted to a single composer.
• General Porfirio Díaz orders a mariachi band to wear upper-class clothing when they play for the visiting United States Secretary of State Elihu Root; this is the beginning of modern mariachi, as well as the traditional dress of future mariachi stars.
• Publication of Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music by Ferruccio Busoni.
• Cosima Wagner steps down from her position as head of the Bayreuth Festival. She is succeeded by her son Siegfried.
