In its 20th season under head coach Bo Schembechler , the team compiled a 9–2–1 record, tied for the Big Ten championship, defeated USC in the 1989 Rose Bowl , outscored opponents by a total of 361 to 167, and was ranked No. 4 in the final AP and UPI polls .
