1996 South Ossetian presidential election


Presidential elections were held in South Ossetia on 10 November 1996. The result was a victory for Lyudvig Chibirov, who received 52.3% of the vote.

Background

The elections followed amendments to the constitution made earlier in the year by the Parliament, which introduced a presidential form of government.

Reactions

President Eduard Shevardnadze stated that the elections “cannot be considered legitimate”, but said that the peace process “should go ahead”.
