1998 African Women's Championship


The 1998 African Women's Championship was the third edition of the African Women's Championship, the biennial international football championship organised by the Confederation of African Football for the women's national teams of Africa. It was held in Nigeria between 17 October and 31 October 1998.
The tournament determined CAF's two qualifiers for the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup — the winner Nigeria and the runners-up Ghana. Nigeria won its third title, beating Ghana 2–0 in the final.

Qualification

Nigeria qualified automatically as hosts, while the remaining seven spots were determined by the qualifying rounds, which took place from March to April 1998.

Qualified teams

, Egypt and Morocco made their first appearances in the tournament. Mozambique also qualified, but failed to arrive for the tournament. Lesotho, which was drafted in as a late replacement, equally failed to show up.

In the knockout stage, if a match is level at the end of normal playing time, extra time is played and followed, if necessary, by kicks from the penalty mark to determine the winner, except for the third place match where no extra time is played.
