successfully defended his title, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final 5–7, 6–4, 6–2, 6–7, 7–5 to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2012 Australian Open. The final took 5 hours and 53 minutes to complete, which was the longest match in duration in Australian Open history and the longest Grand Slam singles final in duration in the Open Era. This match is considered by many to be among the greatest in tennis history, and marked Nadal's third consecutive Grand Slam final loss against Djokovic, with Nadal becoming the first to lose three Grand Slam finals in a row in the Open Era.
This was the last Grand Slam tournament for 2006 French Open Semifinalist and former World No. 3 Ivan Ljubičić, South African player Rik de Voest and last Australian Open for four-time Semifinalist and former World No. 1 Andy Roddick, retiring during his 2nd Round match against local and former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, 2004 Semifinalist and former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, losing in a 5 setter 1st round match against Viktor Troicki and 2006 Semifinalist and former World No. 3 David Nalbandian, losing in a controversial 5 setter 2nd round match against John Isner that lasted 4:41:00 Hours.
