2012 Czech regional elections

Elections to regional councils in the Czech Republic were held in 13 regions on 12–13 October 2012. The Social Democratic Party won in nine regions, though with a considerable loss of vote share. The Communist Party won in two regions and increased its vote share, finishing second overall. The election results were widely seen as a defeat for the Civic Democratic Party, which finished third overall and won only in the Plzeň Region. The regional grouping Mayors for Liberec Region won unexpectedly in Liberec Region.

Background

ČSSD won the previous elections in 2008 in all regions. Although it lost support in the months before the election, the party was still leading in the polls, and the parties involved in the right-wing government were highly unpopular. The country had seen a long-term loss of confidence in the old, established parties, with voters turning to non-parliamentary parties. Support appeared to be growing for the Communist Party, which had been isolated in Czech politics since the Velvet Revolution.
