2012 Palauan presidential election


The 2012 presidential election in Palau was held on November 6, 2012, in conjunction with the Palauan general election. Former President Tommy Remengesau Jr. defeated his successor, Incumbent President of Palau Johnson Toribiong, who was first elected in 2008. President Toribiong conceded the election on social media.

Voter registration

15,305 Palauans were registered to vote in the 2012 presidential and general elections, an increase of 1,516 voters from the previous 2009 election.

Presidential and vice presidential primary election

The presidential and vice presidential primary elections were held on September 26, 2012. The top two candidates in the primary qualified for the presidential general election on November 6, 2012. Approximately 12,000 registered voters were eligible to participate.

Presidential primary

Three candidates contested the presidential primary: Incumbent President Johnson Toribiong, former President Tommy Remengesau Jr., and former Vice President Sandra Pierantozzi, who served as vice president from 2001 to 2005. Remengesau and Toribiong, who placed first and second respectively in the primary, advanced to the November 6th election.

Vice Presidential primary

Four candidates contested the Vice Presidential primary election on September 26, 2012:
Mariur and Bells, who placed first and second, advanced to the November 6th primary election.

Presidential and Vice Presidential results

The presidential election was held on 6 November 2012, coinciding with the nationwide 2012 Palauan general election. Former President Tommy Remengesau defeated incumbent President Johnson Toribiong.
