Rafael Nadal was attempting to become the first male player in the Open Era to achieve a double career Grand Slam and become the third man ever to do so, but lost to fellow compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the first round, marking his first Grand Slam hardcourt first round loss in his career.
Australian Lleyton Hewitt, a 2005 finalist, two-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, played his last professional singles matches. He lost to David Ferrer in the second round.
