The overall turnout was 46.9% and there were 2,308 rejected ballots. Note: "Votes" are the sum of first preference votes across all council wards. The net gain/loss and percentage changes relate to the result of the previous Scottish local elections on 3 May 2007. This is because STV has an element of proportionality which is not present unless multiple seats are being elected. This may differ from other published sources showing gain/loss relative to seats held at dissolution of Scotland's councils. Elections to South Lanarkshire Council were held on 4 May 2017 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the twenty wards created under the Local Governance Act 2004, with 64 Councillors being elected, a reduction of 3 members from 2012. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Following the 2017 election, the Scottish National Party attempted to form a coalition with Labour and the Liberal Democrats which was unsuccessful. The SNP then formed a minority administration.
