Karen Khachanov won his first Masters 1000 title, beating Novak Djokovic in the final, 7–5, 6–4. En route to the final, Khachanov had to save two match points to defeat John Isner in the third round.
Rafael Nadal and Djokovic were in contention of the ATP no. 1 singles ranking at the start of the tournament. Djokovic regained the top spot after winning his opening match alongside Nadal's withdrawal.
This tournament marked the first time since the 1998 Stuttgart Masters that no French or Spanish players made it through to the round of 16 in a Masters series event.
