Abang Openg


Abang Openg bin Abang Sapiee was a Malaysian politician who served as the first Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak, upon the independence of Sarawak from Great Britain and formation of Malaysia in 1963. Before that, the position of Governor of Sarawak was held by a British officer appointed by Queen Elizabeth II and her precursor, King George VI.
Before being appointed as the first Governor, he was active in politics.
After his death on 28 March 1969, he was replaced as Governor by Tuanku Bujang Tuanku Othman.
His sons, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari, now serves as the sixth Chief Minister of Sarawak since 13 January 2017 and is also a member of Sarawak State Legislative Assembly for the Satok constituency, and Datuk Abang Karim is the chairman of Sarawak Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
