Alan D. Schnitzer


Alan D. Schnitzer is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Travelers Companies, Inc., a leading provider of property casualty insurance for auto, home and business. He was previously Vice Chairman of Travelers, and Chief Executive Officer of the company's Business and International Insurance segment. Schnitzer oversaw Travelers’ Field Management, Corporate Communications and Public Policy organizations.

Education

Schnitzer received his Bachelor's degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.

Family

Schnitzer married Anne Berman in 1994daughter of the former CEO of Travelers Insurance Robert I. Lipp. They both attended the University of Pennsylvania at the same time.

Career

Schnitzer became a partner of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP law firm early in his career. During that time his father-in-law and CEO of Travelers Robert Lipp appointed him lead outside counsel for Travelers. He guided the company through the Travelers - St Paul merger in 2004 while at the lawfirm. In 2007 Schnitzer joined Travelers as Vice Chairman and Chief Legal Officer and has served on the company’s Management and Operating Committees since that time. In that role he oversaw the company’s legal, public policy and government affairs functions.
He became Chief Executive Officer of Travelers in December 2015, and was elected Chairman of the Board in August 2017. Schnitzer was named Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Business and International Insurance for Travelers in July 2014. He also oversaw Field Management, Corporate Communications and Public Policy. Previously, he headed the company’s Financial, Professional and International Insurance segment. Schnitzer was instrumental in repositioning the company’s international business, including Travelers’ expanded presence in South America and Canada. In 2013, under Schnitzer's leadership, Travelers’ International Insurance acquired The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company from E-L Financial Corporation Limited. In 2015, Travelers’ joint venture with J. Malucelli acquired a majority interest in Cardinal Compañía de Seguros, a Colombian start-up surety provider.

Advisory positions

Schnitzer is on the Board of Directors for the American Property Casualty Insurance Association and Partnership for New York City. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, The Economic Club of New York, The Business Council and Business Round-table. He served on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Advisory Committee created under the Dodd-Frank Act.

Philanthropy

Schnitzer is on the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania and is Vice Chair of the Advisory Board for the Penn Institute for Urban Research, and a Vice Chair of the Corporate Fund Board for the Kennedy Center. He is on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Council for Education Reform, the New York City Ballet, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is also a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Business Committee.

Awards

Schnitzer received the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Business Committee Civic Leadership Award in the spring of 2015.
