Alexander Boot

Alexander Boot is a Russian-born journalist and author, previously a university lecturer and advertising executive. His work promotes conservatism and traditional European culture.

Early life

Born in Moscow in the days of Stalin, Boot grew up there and graduated in philology from Moscow State University. He then became a lecturer in Moscow on English and American literature and was also an art critic. In 1969, his son Max was born. In response to persecution by the KGB, in 1973 Boot fled the Soviet Union and settled in the United States, where he worked in advertising, later pursuing this career in the United Kingdom.

Writing career

Boot became an occasional journalist in the British news media, writing articles for the Daily Mail, the London Magazine, the Salisbury Review and The Independent, while continuing with his main career in business. However, in 2005 he retired as a company director and took to writing full-time. He soon began to write books about culture, his principal theme being that the West he had fled Russia to find was disappearing before his eyes. His first book was How the West Was Lost. In 2011, Boot launched his own blog, alexanderboot.com, and now lives in London and Burgundy. He has said that “by nature I'm not a political activist but a political philosopher“.

Political position

Boot has stated that both socialism and Islam as ideologies are equally inimicable to Judeo-Christian Western civilization, and that the very nature of the West has changed irrevocably, making it a purely geographical notion. “The house is still there, but the tenants are entirely different.”
