Alexandria was founded in the 1830s. The community was named after John Alexander, the proprietor of a nearby ferry. A post office called Alexandria has been in operation since 1840.

The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93. The median age in the city was 41.5 years. 24.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.4% were from 25 to 44; 32% were from 45 to 64; and 11.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 54.1% male and 45.9% female.

There were 79 housing units at an average density of 211.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 98.80% White and 1.20% African American. There were 70 households, out of which 31.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% were married couples living together, 2.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.91. In the city the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 104.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.9 males. The median income for a household in the city was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $32,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,404.
