Alice Diop


Alice Diop, born in 1979, is a documentary filmmaker, who makes films about contemporary French society.

Biography

Born in Aulnay-sous-Bois in 1979, daughter of Senegalese parents, Alice Diop was raised until she was ten in the Cité des 3000 housing project In Aulnay-sous-Bois near Paris. At University she began studying history, then studied sociology in Évry gaining her DESS degree.
Fifteen years after leaving Aulnay-sous-Bois, she returned to film the cultural diversity of the area she grew up in for her first documentary La Tour du monde.
Her film Vers La tendresse won the best short film award at the French César Awards in 2017. When receiving her prize she dedicated the film to victims of police violence.
