Alto is a census-designated place adjacent to Mill Valley in Marin County, California. It lies at an elevation of 26 feet. The population was 711 at the 2010 census.

At the 2010 census Alto had a population of 711. The population density was 5,654.1 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Alto was 619 White, 8 African American, 2 Native American, 30 Asian, 1 Pacific Islander, 16 from other races, and 35 from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 51 people.
The census reported that 100% of the population lived in households.
There were 297 households, 108 had children under the age of 18 living in them, 140 were opposite-sex married couples living together, 34 had a female householder with no husband present, 6 had a male householder with no wife present. There were 17 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 0 same-sex married couples or partnerships. 33.7% of households were one person and 10.1% were one person aged 65 or older.
