Ambalappuzha


Ambalappuzha is a small town in the Alappuzha district of Kerala state, south India. It is located 14 km south of Alappuzha, the district headquarters.
Ambalapuzha is divided into the two panchayats of Ambalapuzha North and Ambalapuzha South.

History

The headquarters of the historic Chempakasseri Ambalapuzha rajahs were near the temple. Ambalappuzha remained an independent principality under the Chempakasseris until the mid-18th century when it was conquered and absorbed by the Kingdom of Travancore under Marthanda Varma. Thereafter, the Chempakasseri royal family went into decline.

Geography

Ambalapuzha is a coastal town, near National Highway 66, about south of Allepey. Ambalapuzha is the name of a revenue Taluk of Alappuzha District. Head quaters of Ambalapuzha Taluk is located at Alappuzha Town. Taluk boundaries are: North - Mararilalkulam, South - Thottappally, West - Arabian Sea and east - Vembanad Lake, Pallathuruthy Ar and Canals.

Krishna Temple

The Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple is located east of the town junction and was maintained by the local ruler Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal Devanarayanan Thampuran.The temple offers prasad ham of payasam, a sweet pudding made of rice and milk.
Kalakkaththu Kunchan Nambiar also spent his youth at Ambalappuzha.

Ambalapuzha assembly constituency is part of Alappuzha.
