Anthony Tan


Anthony Tan is a Malaysian-born Singaporean internet entrepreneur. In June 2012 he and Tan Hooi Ling co-founded Grab Holdings Inc.

Biography

Tan was born in 1982 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He completed his B.A. in Economics and Public Policy at University of Chicago with a First-Class Honours and his M.B.A at Harvard Business School. He is a visiting scholar at the National University of Singapore.
His business plan was the runner-up in the HBS New Venture Competition in 2011, winning $25,000. Using the proceeds from the competition and their own personal funds, Tan Hooi Ling and Anthony Tan launched a mobile application, first called MyTeksi and later renamed to GrabTaxi, in June 2012.
In 2014, Grab moved its company headquarters from Malaysia to Singapore. According to the company's filings with the Singapore government in 2017, Anthony Tan also acquired Singaporean citizenship. However, in 2019, he was listed as #38 on Forbes Top 50 richest people in Malaysia..

Immigration

He did not respond to questions from Forbes Asia regarding his Singaporean citizenship, some rumors believe that the taken up of Singaporean citizenship was influenced by Malaysia's affirmative action policies.
