Appian Corporation is a cloud computing company currently headquartered in Mclean, Virginia, part of the Dulles Technology Corridor.
Appian sells a Platform as a Service for building enterprise software applications. It is a leader in the Low-Code Development, Business process management, and Case Management markets. Its Low-Code Automation Platform enables businesses to create apps using little or no code.
Appian was named the 2018 Washington D.C. area "Top Workplace" by The Washington Post.

History

Appian was founded in 1999 by Matthew Calkins with co-founders Michael Beckley, Marc Wilson, and Robert Kramer. Matt Calkins is the current CEO.
In 2001, Appian developed Army Knowledge Online. At the time, it was regarded as “the world's largest intranet".
In 2004, Appian released Appian Enterprise, its first Business Process Management Suite software platform.
In 2010, Appian Cloud was accredited with Federal Information Security Management Act low-level security by the U.S. Education Department. In 2013, it received FISMA Moderate Authorization and Accreditation from the General Services Administration. GSA procurement offices used Appian Cloud for acquisition planning.
In 2014, Appian received $37.5 million in secondary investments from New Enterprise Associates.
By 2016, Appian's software platform had evolved to include broader aspects of application development with a focus on low-code development.
On May 25, 2017, Appian became a publicly-traded company, trading under the symbol APPN on the NASDAQ Global Exchange
In 2018, Appian announced it will move its headquarters to Tysons, Virginia
In May 2019, Appian released Appian AI enabling artificial intelligence capabilities in applications built on Appian's platform.
On January 7, 2020, Appian announced that it acquired Novayre Solutions SL, developer of the Jidoka RPA platform. In March, the company launched a health management app to help other businesses track workforce health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, by collecting information from employees and storing it in a HIPAA-compliant cloud.
