Harris
was an
American
discus thrower
.
As
Indiana
University student
he won the
1940 NCAA Track and Field Championships
, defending his
title
1941
with
the world
record of 53.26 m. In 1941 he also became US champion.
In
World War II
he was a
bomber pilot
, but as an
African American
he couldn't
get
a job as a
commercial pilot
after the war
. Finally he became
physical education
teacher
at the
Harlem, New York
YMCA.
In 2001
he was introduced into the
Indiana University
Athletics Hall of Fame
.
