Ascension Station


The Ascension Station was a naval station of the British Royal Navy its headquarters were on Ascension Island, in the South Atlantic. The station was commanded by the Commandant, Ascension.

History

In 1815 the Royal navy established a naval garrison on Ascension Island at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. By 1821 a Victualling Station was established. In 1823 the Royal Marines assumed command of the station. During the nineteenth century, the Royal Navy used the station for its ships involved in anti-slave trade operations. Ascension Island was under direct control of the Board of Admiralty until 1923.
The naval base and shore establishment was known as “HMS Ascension” or “Ascension Dockyard”. It was in operation from 1816 to 1923.
