Association of Teachers in Biological Sciences


The Association of Teachers in Biological Sciences is a non-profit organisation of biology educators in India. It was founded in 2006 with the aim of creating a platform for teachers in biological sciences to contribute in biology education. It has become an national organisation which promotes the teaching of biology, supports the learning of biology based on scientific principles and advocates for biology in the country.
The ATBS along with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers and Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education conducts the National Standard Examination in Biology, which is a nationwide olympiad held every year, and acts as the screening test for the International Biology Olympiad.

History

The ATBS was officially conceived at HBCSE, TIFR in April, 2006 under the proposed name 'Indian Association of Teachers in Biological Sciences'. Later the word 'Indian' was dropped and it was registered with the Charity Commissioner, Mumbai in 2011. The first issue of ATBS newsletter was published in on National Teachers' day, 5 September in 2013.

The governance structure of the ATBS consists of an Executive Committee led by a President. To run different aspects of the organisation, several committees focus on areas such as finance, memberships and professional development.
