Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013


Austria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. The Austrian entry was selected through the national selection "Österreich rockt den Song Contest", organised by the Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk. The country was represented by the song "Shine" performed by Natália Kelly, which failed to qualify from the first semi-final of the contest, placing 14th and scoring 27 points. The entry was written by Alexander Kahr, Andreas Grass, Nikola Paryla and Natália Kelly herself.

Before Eurovision

Österreich rockt den Song Contest

Österreich rockt den Song Contest was the national final that selected Austria's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013. The competition took place on 15 January 2013 at the ORF studios in Vienna, hosted by Mirjam Weichselbraun and Andi Knoll.

Format

Ten songs competed in the competition where the winner was selected by a 50/50 combination of public voting and an international expert jury panel consisting of five members. Viewers were able to vote via telephone or SMS.
The members of the international jury were:
ORF invited all interested artists to submit their applications to the broadcaster until the first week of November 2011. Five artists were selected by a team of music professionals consisting of Thomas Rabitsch, Ralf Strobl and Anja Rabitsch. The five artists selected to compete in the national final were revealed on 11 December 2012 during radio show Ö3-Wecker, aired on Ö3. The finalist songs were presented to the public on 14 January 2013 during Ö3-Wecker.

Final

The televised final took place on 15 January 2013. Five songs competed and the combination of votes from an international jury panel and a public vote selected "Shine" performed by Natália Kelly as the winner. In addition to the competing entries, each artist performed a former Eurovision winning song.

At Eurovision

Austria was allocated to compete in the first semi-final on 14 May for a place in the final on 18 May. In the first semifinal, the producers of the show decided that Austria would open the semi-final and perform 1st, preceding Estonia. On stage, Kelly had five backing singers: Karin Bauer, Regina Mallinger, Birgit Kubica, Harald Baumgartner and Monika Ballwein.
Austria failed to qualify from the first semi-final of the competition, placing 14th and scoring 27 points.
