Azucena Arbeleche


Azucena María Arbeleche Perdomo is a Uruguayan economist, professor, and civil servant, serving as Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uruguay since March 1, 2020, being the first woman to hold that office.

Career

Arbeleche studied at The British Schools of Montevideo, and graduated with a licentiate in economics from the of the University of the Republic. She earned a master's degree in applied macroeconomics at the Catholic University of Chile. She was the director of the Debt Management Unit of Uruguay's Ministry of Economy and Finance from 2011 to 2014. Senator and presidential candidate Luis Lacalle Pou announced her as his choice for Minister of Economy and Finance, but he was defeated in the second round of the general election in November 2014.
An adherent of the National Party, Arbeleche was a professor at institutions such as the University of the Republic, the Catholic University of Uruguay, and the University of Montevideo. In 2014 she was featured on the cover of the magazine Seis Grados of the newspaper El Observador. She has three children with her husband Juan. She is as an adviser to Senator Lacalle Pou.
