Basanti Devi College


Basanti Devi College is the first government sponsored college in Kolkata and was founded by the Government of West Bengal in 1959 to reduce the traffic jam in girl’s colleges in the southern part of Kolkata. Named after the eminent freedom fighter Basanti Devi, the first lady to be imprisoned under British Rule for being involved in the war of Independence of India. It is affiliated with the University of Calcutta.

The College

The college is located in the junction of urban and the rural conglomerate. Basanti Devi College caters the women students for both the localities. A large group of them are students of the college are also from backward classes; minority communities and some are also from below poverty line. There is provision for admitting women with special needs.
