Former India fast bowler and bowling coach of Kerala Tinu Yohannan described Thampi as "athletic" and "quite strong", and added, "He's very deceptive. He has a round-arm action where he can really get the ball to move. He can reverse the old ball." Thampi has stated that he "got yorkers from tennis ball cricket."
