Bernard Knowles was an English film director, producer, cinematographer and screenwriter. Born in Manchester, Knowles worked with Alfred Hitchcock on numerous occasions before the director emigrated to Hollywood. Knowles later graduated as a director and screenwriter, directing a number of high-profile films, including the 1946 Gainsborough MelodramaThe Magic Bow. He worked a great deal on television shows, including Fabian of the Yard, Dial 999, Ivanhoe and The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Cinematographer
Knowles' early credits include Mumsie and Dawn for Herbert Wilcox. He also shot Love's Option, The Broken Melody, The Silver King, Auld Lang Syne, Rookery Nook, The Nipper, French Leave, School for Scandal, Canaries Sometimes Sing, The Calendar, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and White Face. Knowles went on to shoot The Good Companions, Falling for You and working on the lighting for Jew Süss. He shot Jack Ahoy and The Camels are Coming.
Alfred Hitchcock
Knowles combined with Alfred Hitchcock on The 39 Steps. He shot Forever England, King of the Damned and Rhodes of Africa. Knowles and Hitchcock were reunited on Secret Agent and Sabotage. In between Knowles filmed East Meets West. Knowles shot Take My Tip then was back for Hitchcock on Young and Innocent. He did some uncredited camera work on King Solomon's Mines. Knowles shot The Mikado and was back with Hitchcock for Jamaica Inn, the last movie the director made before moving to the US. Knowles shot French Without Tears for Anthony Asquith; Spy for a Day ; Gaslight, for Thorold Dickinson; Freedom Radio and Quiet Wedding for Asquith; The Saint's Vacation ; Jeannie, The Day Will Dawn, Unpublished Story, Secret Mission and Talk About Jacqueline for Harold French; The Demi-Paradise for Asquith; and English Without Tears for French.
Later films as director included some B Pictures, Park Plaza 605 and Barbados Quest with Tom Conway. He began to work in television, directing episodes of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Presents, Fabian of the Yard, Colonel March of Scotland Yard, The New Adventures of Martin Kane, Sword of Freedom, The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, The Buccaneers, Ivanhoe, Target, Dial 999, and The Adventures of Robin Hood.
Later career
Knowles' later directing credits include Frozen Alive, and . He co-directed Hell Is Empty and was the director on Magical Mystery Tour, starring The Beatles. He died shortly before his 75th birthday in Taplow, Buckinghamshire in 1975.
