Betty Apiafi


Betty Jocelyne Okagua - Apiafi is a Nigerian economist, retired banker, educationist and politician. She was elected to the lower house in 2007 for the People's Democratic Party. In the 2019 general elections, she was elected to the Nigerian Senate.

Early life and Education

Betty Apiafi was born on 19 February 1962. She earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Port Harcourt and a master's degree from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

Political Career

In the 2007 general elections, she was elected to the Nigerian House of Representatives as a candidate of the People's Democratic Party in the federal constituency of Abua—Odual—Ahoada East. She was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 2011. Other women elected included Folake Olunloyo, Maimunat Adaji, Martha Bodunrin, Suleiman Oba Nimota, Rose Oko and Nkoyo Toyo.
She was elected again in the 2015 general election. In the 2019 general elections, she was elected to the Nigerian Senate as a candidate of the People's Democratic Party in the Rivers West Senatorial District. She is the first female member of the Nigerian House of Representative and Member of the Senate from Rivers state.
