Bhikhari Thakur


Bhikari Thakur was an Indian Bhojpuri poet, playwright, lyricist, actor, folk dancer, folk singer and social activist, popularly known as the "Shakespeare of Bhojpuri". He is often called Rai Bahadur. He published 29 books in his life including plays, poem etc. His most famous plays are Bidesiya and Gabarghichor, which is often compared with Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle.

Thakur was born in a Barber family on 18 December 1887 in Kutubpur village in Chhapra.
