Founded

August 1979
, one of its most
prominent
leaders was the
ethnic
Hutu
intellectual
Melchior Ndadaye
, who became the first
democratically elected
president of Burundi
in 1993.
When UBU was
disbanded
,
followers
of Ndadaye regrouped into the
Front for Democracy in Burundi
.
