Butiama


Butiama is a town in northern Tanzania and the birthplace of Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania. Butiama is administrative centre of Butiama District, and lies within the Mara Region; it is also the local residential area of the Wazanaki tribe which is believed to be the smallest tribe in the region. The Mwalimu Nyerere Museum Centre is located in the town.
Several things have been named Butiama because of its significance to Tanzanian history, including the ferry that operates between Mwanza and Ukerewe.
According to the 2002 Tanzania National Census, the population of Butiama was 15,383.
