Thể Công is the collective name for numerous sports clubs that were founded within the Vietnam People's Army. With strong tradition of sports in the Army, Thể Công possess a very long and rich history. Among the clubs, the football team is regarded as one of the best in the history of Vietnamese football. The football club also has one of the strongest and most loyal fan-bases in the country.
History
The club was founded in 1954 as an army sports clubCâu lạc bộ Quân đội . In 1990, the club was renamed Thể Công.Parts of the club management also worked for the company Viettel, a telecommunications company from Vietnam. In 2007, however, they returned to the old club name, Thể Công. With five won championship titles, the club is the country's champion. In 2004, exactly 50 years after its foundation, the club finished V-League at 11th place and was relegated to the lower division. After that, the club changed its name to Thể Công Viettel F.C. after its new sponsor Viettel - the Army Electronics and Telecommunication Corporation. On January 19, 2007, the club finally gained the right to be promoted back to V-League after winning over Tay Ninh 5-3. Immediately thereafter, the official team name was reversed back to Thể Công. In 2010, the club again switched its name back to Viettel FC, and also voluntarily left the professional football set-up. Instead, the club decided to focus on youth development, and start competing again in the amateur 4th tier of Vietnamese football. In 2016 the club finally returned to professional football after winning promotion to the V.League 2. In 2018, Viettel F.C. won the V.League 2 championship and go back to the national top tier V.League 1. They also switched again to the famous name Thể Công when the tournament started. Thể Công is the most successful football club in Vietnam with five V-League titles and thirteen championship titles of the former League A of North Vietnam. The club has also contributed many great players to the Vietnam National Football Team.
