In the summer of 2009, FC Hunedoara was founded, to keep alive the football in Hunedoara. Not to be confused with its predecessor Corvinul Hunedoara or SC Corvinul 2005 Hunedoara, however the club is still considered a phoenix club despite no legal continuity between the three.
Four years in a row FC Hunedoara missed promotion by a slight margin. In the summer of 2016 the club was excluded from Liga III due to financial problems. In the same summer the club was reorganized and changing its name to CS Hunedoara and enrolling directly in the Liga IV, but without a promotion right for the 2016–17 Liga IV season. They currently play in the Liga IV, after finishing 5th in the Liga IV, Hunedoara County, in the 2016–2017 season.
