Calgary Mustangs (soccer)

The Calgary Mustangs was the name of two Calgary, Alberta, based professional soccer teams.

CPSL Calgary Mustangs

A team named Calgary Mustangs competed in the original Canadian Professional Soccer League for the league's only season in 1983. The Mustangs finished fifth in the six team league.

USL Calgary Mustangs

Calgary was home of the 2001 Calgary Storm, which played one season in the USL Premier Development League, finishing as playoff Champions.
In 2002, the Storm moved to the USL A-League. The team continued in the USL A-League, changing its name to the Calgary Mustangs for the 2004 season. Following the end of the 2004 season, the owners elected not to play in 2005 and the team folded.
The team never acquired a significant profile in the Calgary sports marketplace and never had great fan support. The USL PDL Calgary Storm averaged 2,003 fans per game at Foothills Stadium in a city of nearly 900,000 people. In their final season the team's average attendance was just 1,258 at 35,650 capacity McMahon Stadium, which at the time was roughly equal to a team playing in the sixth tier of English professional soccer.
