Calum Gourlay


Calum Gourlay is a Scottish bassist, composer and band leader. He is considered one of the UK's leading young musicians and a virtuoso of the double bass. He is largely based in London, UK.

Early life and education

Gourlay grew up in Glasgow and Fife. He learned cello as a child and switched to double bass at the age of 14. He played in his father's jazz workshops and Scottish big bands, including Tommy Smith’s Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.
He trained at Royal Academy of Music, where he won the Benjamin Dollinger Prize and the Yamaha / Classic FM Jazz Scholarship.
