Canini (tribe)


Canini is a taxonomic rank which represents the dog-like tribe of the subfamily Caninae, and is sister to the fox-like tribe Vulpini. Its members are colloquially known as true dogs.

Taxonomy

Members of this tribe include:
Canina: The wolf-like canines include the domestic dog , gray wolf, red wolf, eastern wolf, coyote, Eurasian golden jackal, African golden wolf, Ethiopian wolf, black-backed jackal, side-striped jackal, dhole, and African wild dog.
Cerdocyonina: The South American canines include the bush dog, hoary fox, crab-eating fox, and maned wolf.
Members of the subtribe Canina produce canid hybrids due to their shared karyotype of 78 chromosomes arranged in 39 pairs.
