Capterra, Inc. is an online marketplace vendor serving as an intermediary between buyers and sellers within the software industry.. The company assists consumers with selecting software for their needs.

History

The company was founded in 1999 by Michael Ortner and Rakesh Chilakapati. It is based in Arlington, Virginia. The company uses a pay-per-click model. Vendors would pay only when a Capterra user clicked through to their website. Vendors can bid on the basis of software category & listing position. Apart from Capterra, vendors get the option to advertise even on other Gartner owned channels like Software Advice and Get App. All these platforms have paid listing as well as organic listings based on reviews.
After its revenue increased by 633% from 2003 to 2006, Capterra was mentioned in Inc. magazine's 2007 ranking of the 500 fastest-growing private U.S. companies. By the end of 2007, there were more than 2 million software buyers and nearly 1,000 software vendors advertised on the website. 
In 2009, the site allowed software users to leave reviews.
Gartner bought Capterra in September 2015.
In 2018 Capterra conducted a Top Tech trends survey on how small businesses manage technology investments and consider project management software. In August 2019, Capterra is reported to have delivered 1 million software reviews on its platform.
