Carolyn Burke
Carolyn Burke, is an Australian-born American biographer, art critic, and translator. Her main focus is on feminist studies and strong independent artistic women of the 1920s through the 1940s.
Born in Sydney, Australia, she lived in Philadelphia and spent many years in Paris, and now lives in Santa Cruz, California.
Burke has taught at Princeton and the University of California at Santa Cruz and at Davis; at the Universities of Western Sydney and New South Wales in Australia; and at the Sorbonne and the University of Lille in France.
She is the author of Becoming Modern: The Life of Mina Loy, about the noted poet, which earned prominent reviews in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The New Republic and The Nation. Burke's work Lee Miller: A Life was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a finalist for The National Book Critics Circle Biography award about the model turned photographer, and her book about the iconic French chanteuse entitled No Regrets: The Life of Edith Piaf.
Burke has spoken at writers’ festivals and literary events in the U.S., U.K., France, and Australia. Her appearances include campuses ; radio and television in San Francisco, New York City, and Sydney; and cultural groups.Books
