Charles Bawden


Charles Roskelly Bawden FBA was a professor of the Mongolian language in the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London from 1955 to 1984. He wrote on Mongolian history and literature, and published a Mongolian-English dictionary that is often cited as the most comprehensive available. John Man and Craig Clunas were his students.
In addition to having been elected a Fellow of the British Academy, he was also awarded the Order of the Pole Star by the Mongolian government.
He donated his books to the Ancient India & Iran Trust at Cambridge University.
He died on 11 August 2016 at the age of 92.
