Chas is a Municipal Corporation in Bokaro district, in the state of Jharkhand, India. Chas is the sub-urban area of Bokaro Steel City and also a known as a wholesale market. Chas is one of the fastest growing urban region in Jharkhand and was ranked as 41st cleanest city of India in 2017 and 19th cleanest city in 2018, according to Swachh Survekshan. Chira Chas is one of the major residential hotbed and growing satellite town of Chas.
History
Once a small grain trading hub of the region, Chas became notable during the Second World War when the British government used it as a base to supply soldiers fighting in the eastern front against the Japanese. After the decision of Government of India to establish the Bokaro Steel Plant, the economic activity of Chas gathered momentum. It was the administrative headquarters of the area when Bokaro was a part of Dhanbad district, and later when Bokaro became a district itself. Later the headquarters were moved to the Bokaro steel city.
Geography
Chas is located at. It has an average elevation of 210 metres. It is situated on the junction of National Highway 23 and National Highway 32. Chas is situated on the banks of Garga river and Dhanbad-Bokaro-Ranchi Expressway passes through it.
Demographics
As per 2011 Census of India, Chas Nagar Parishad had a total population of 141,640, of which 74,720 were males and 66,913 females. Scheduled Castes numbered 6,507 and Scheduled Tribes numbered 796. On 10 February 2015, Chas was accorded municipal corporation status adding Kandra and Bandhgora to its area increasing the town's population to 156,888 from 141,640.

Kaushal Triveni Mega Food Park of Triveni Groups and Rail Wheel Factory in joint venture with Indian Railways and Govt. of Jharkhand is also coming up at Chandankiyari. Bihar State Milk Co-operative Federation have a processing plant at Sector-12. GAIL's Jagadishpur–Haldia–Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline is a project expecting completion in 2020. JHBDPL project will be one of the largest gas pipeline projects of India. Chas is also known for its wholesale markets and has many small and middle scale industries also. Chas also has an influx of retail and supermarket chains like V-Mart, Citi Style, et cetera, and vehicle showrooms of KTM, Honda, Hero, Maruti Suzuki, JCB, Yamaha, TVS, Mahindra, et cetera. Chas also has apex trade associations, i.e., Bokaro Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Jainamore Chamber of Commerce and Jharkhand Small Tiny Service Business Enterprises Association. Chira Chas is a real-estate hotbed with 100s of projects from Aashiyana Groups, Anand Vihar Constructions, Prapti Estate, Malti Infra Projects, et cetera, giving a boom in this sector.
Places of Interest
Chas have many natural and historical sites in and around the city. Bokaro Steel City, the neighbourhood city of Chas is known for its planned township of SAIL and various sights present in the city like Jagannath Temple, City Park, Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park,etc. Hi-Tech Park, constructed under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme situated at ITI More. Garga Dam at Garga river is 16 km and Guwai Dam is at 18 km away from city, both are good sites for picnic among residents. Sri Sri Kalika Maharani Temple at Phase 3 - Ashiyana, Jagdamba Temple, Jain Temple, Old Church and Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha at NH-18 are major spiritual spots of Chas. Ruins of historical terracotta temple at Amdiha village in Chandankiyari is a hidden treasure and very similar to Maluti temples of Dumka. The Multiversity at Pupunkighatbera is a centre of meditation and spiritual guidance. Chas also boasts few resorts for leisure times and enjoyment like Zaika Resorts, The Nature, etc.
