Chester and Birkenhead Railway


The Chester and Birkenhead Railway ran from Birkenhead to Chester, opened on 23 September 1840. On 22 July 1847 the railway merged with the Birkenhead, Lancashire and Cheshire Junction Railway to become the Birkenhead Railway.

Currently Working

The lines between Birkenhead and Chester, together with the line from Hooton to Ellesmere Port, now form part of the Wirral Line of the Merseyrail network.
