1870
. It is
endemic
to
southern China
.
Its
natural
habitats
are
subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests
and
subtropical
or
tropical
moist
montane forests
. It is
threatened
by
habitat loss
. It was formerly considered a
subspecies
of the
black-browed barbet
.
