Chitragupt (composer)


Chitragupt Shrivastava, better known as Chitragupt, was an Indian film music director in Hindi cinema and Bhojpuri cinema.

Personal life

He was born in Sawreji, a village located in Saran district in the Indian state of Bihar. He was a postgraduate in two subjects. His sons Anand-Milind are also Bollywood music directors.

Career

Chitragupt composed music for 150 films spanning from 1946 to 1998. Popular amongst them were Zabak, Bhaabhi, Oonche Log, Insaaf Ki Manzil and Kali Topi Lal Rumaal. He became a household name after the 1962 release of Main Chup Rahungi starring Meena Kumari and Sunil Dutt. This film became a "super-hit" at the box office and Songs like “Chand Jaane Kahan Kho Gaya” and "Koi Bata De Dil hai kahan" became popular.
Also the song "Machlati hui hawa ye " sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from "Ganga Ki Lahrein" is a hit. He made Kishore Kumar sing the classical song "Payalwaali dekh na" and the popular song "Agar sun le koi nagma "
