Chowrangee (Vidhan Sabha constituency)


Chowrangee is an assembly constituency in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Overview

As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 162 Chowranghee is composed of the following: Ward Nos. 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53 and 62 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Chowranghee is part of No. 24 Kolkata Uttar. Prior to the 2009 Indian general election it was part of Calcutta South.

2014 Bye-election

A bye-election was held on 13 September 2014 following the resignation of the sitting MLA, Shikha Choudhury who switched over from Trinamool Congress to Congress.

In the 2011 state assembly elections, Sikha Mitra of Trinamool Congress defeated her nearest rival Bimal Singh of RJD.

2006

In the 2006 state assembly elections, Subrata Bakshi of Trinamool Congress defeated her nearest rival Narayan Jain of CPI.

1977-2006

In the 2006 state assembly elections, Subrata Bakshi of Trinamool Congress won the Chowranghee assembly seat defeating Narayan Jain of CPI. Subrata Mukherjee of Trinamool Congress/Congress won the seat in 2001 and 1996, defeating Sahid Hossain of JD and Paul Mantosh of JD respectively. In 1991, Siddhartha Shankar Ray of Congress defeated Ashok Mitra of CPI. In 1987, Debi Prasad Chattopdahyay of Congress defeated Badsa Alam of CPI. Sisir Bose of Congress defeated Zahurul Hoque of CPI in 1982. Sandip Das of JD defeated Amal Datta of CPI in 1977.

1957-1972 Chowranghee

Sankar Ghose of Congress won the seat in 1972 and 1971. Siddhartha Shankar Ray of Congress won the seat in 1969 and 1967.Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy of Congress won the seat in 1962 defeating Biswanath Mukherjee of CPI. Bijoy Singh Nahar won the seat in 1957. In independent India’s first general election in 1951, there was no assembly constituency named Chowringhee.

In 1957 and 1951 there was an assembly constituency named Fort. Maitreyee Bose of Congress won in 1957. Narendranath Sen of Congress won in 1951.
