Colton, Norfolk


Colton is a village and former civil parish, west of Norwich, now in the parish of Marlingford and Colton, in the South Norfolk district, in the county of Norfolk, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 175.

Features

Colton has a church called St Andrew, and a pub called The Norfolk Lurcher on High House Farm Lane which first opened in 1991 and was called the Ugly Bug Inn until 2007.

History

The name "Colton" means 'Cola's farm/settlement' or 'Koli's farm/settlement'. Colton was recorded in the Domesday Book as Coletuna. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Marlingford. In 2001 the new parish was renamed to "Marlingford and Colton".
