The journal was first published by Grupo Comunicar, non-profit professional association, established in Spain in 1989 with expertise in Educomunication, it collaborates with various centers and universities at the international level. It is composed of "Andalusian journalists and educators who pursue a critical, creative and pluralistic use of the media in the classroom, while promoting ethics and media education". The first issue of the journal was published in October 1993 entitled: "Comunicar, mass media and teaching journal". The dossier in this issue was “Learning with the media”.In 1994 it became "Comunicar, Media and Education Journal". Since then, it has been published continuously and promptly publishing four issues a year.
Structure of the Journal
The journal is structured in two macro-sections: - Monographic Dossier: Monographic articles on emerging topics. - Kaleidoscope: Miscellaneous section dedicated to research on various topics related to communication and education. “Research work in communication and education, especially the intersection of both: media education, as well as reports, studies, proposals and state-of-the-art articles on these same topics”.
Management
It has a double blind peer review process. Manuscript management is carried out using the Open Journal Systems, an open source software for scientific journal management. The print and online versions are published in Spanish and English. In addition, titles, abstracts, and keywords have Chinese and Portuguese versions for wider distribution, impact, and international recognition.

It is accessible in different formats and platforms such as Issuu. It is also present on social media, scientific social networks as well as audiovisual and multimedia channels such as YouTube, Flickr, Baidu and Weibo. Since 2014, ‘Comunicar’ is Q1 in the main international indexations for quality journals: JCR and SCOPUS. In JCR, in 2019 it has an impact factor of 3.338, Q1 in Communication and Q1 in Education. Other quality indicators are: 5 Year Impact Factor 3.785. Immediacy Index: 1.750; Eigenfactor Score: 0.000760; Article Influence Score: 0.288. In Scopus in 2019 its impact factor is 2.79, Q1 in Cultural Studies ; Q1 in Communication and Q1 in Education In the Integrated Classification of Scientific Journals 201912 it is positioned in category, Excellence A+, where those ranked in the first quartile of JCR categories are placed. In REDIB 2019 it is the first Ibero-American journal in all areas, with overall rating. In SCImago Journal, it is since 2012 Q1 journal in Cultural Studies and since 2014 Q1 in the areas of Education and Communication. In 2019 it has an H-26, the first Spanish journal in Communication and Cultural Studies with an SJR-2018 of 0.851 In Dialnet Métricas 2019 2019 its 2018 Impact Factor is 3.275. Q1 in Education and Q1 in Communication. Since 2007 it has the FECYT seal of quality, a certificate to recognize the editorial and scientific quality of Spanish scientific journals by the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología.
