Council Offices, Caernarfon

The Council Offices is a municipal facility at Shirehall Street in Caernarfon, Wales. It is a Grade II listed building.

History

The building, which was designed in the Gothic style, was built as the county gaol and completed in 1869. Located to the north of the old County Hall, the site incorporates a tower that once formed part of the town walls. The building closed as a prison in 1921 and was subsequently converted to create offices for Caernarvonshire County Council. After the implementation of the Local Government Act 1972, the offices, by then known as the "County Offices", became the headquarters of Gwynedd County Council in 1974. On 1 April 1996, under the Local Government Act 1994, Gwynedd Council became the local authority in the area and took over the offices. Additional facilities have been built on the east side of Shirehall Street.
