Cyber Core

Cyber Core is a vertical scrolling shooter that was released for NEC's TurboGrafx-16 and the Sharp X68000 computer in 1990.

Story

In the year 2269, Earth is overrun with enormous, cybernetic monsters known as Hyper Insects. Their primary base is an underground mobile fort known only as the mothership. In order to combat the Hyper Insects, the defense forces create an insect-themed bio-jet in similar form to the enemy called the Chimera which mutates the pilot into a humanoid insect upon use. This happens to the protagonist Kato Melange, who has been assigned to attack the Hyper Insects and reclaim Earth.

Soundtrack

The game's soundtrack was composed by Toshio Murai and Masahiro Teramoto. An arranged version of the soundtrack was released by Tokuma Communications Japan on April 25, 1990, featuring arrangements of all eight stage themes as well as the prologue and ending themes.

Gameplay

The game played similarly to Dragon Spirit as players controlled a living flying creature that could change colors, earning more hit points and thus changing its firing pattern and weapons. The Chimera could mutate into four varieties and be equipped with one of four different types of firing patterns depending on the item color. The ship also had a shield that could be increased. Extends were set at every 100,00 points.

Possible influences

Some of the content seems to be influenced by the film/manga Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, such as its time period and insects overtaking the world.
