Ethnic Melanesians known as Kanak constituted 39% of the population in 2014, followed by Europeans with 27%. The Europeans are the largest ethnic group in the province Sud, while Kanak are the majority in the two other provinces. There is also a large minority from other Polynesian islands, mainly from Wallis and Futana, but also from Tahiti and Vanuatu.
