Deri, Caerphilly


Deri is a village in Caerphilly County Borough, Wales. 'Deri' is Welsh for oak trees. Deri along with Pentwyn and Fochriw make up the community of Darran Valley. The village grew around the Industrial Age to serve the collieries of Fochriw, Pencarreg and Groesfaen.

Sport

Although a small settlement Deri has a strong sporting past, producing Welsh champion boxers, Tom and Billy Thomas. The village is also home to rugby union club Deri RFC.

The village was the birthplace of Teardrop Explodes singer Julian Cope in 1957
